For Yellowstone fans, the Dutton family’s story is far from over. But Kevin Costner may or may not have other plans.

In February, a month after the drama’s season 5 midseason finale aired on Paramount Network, Deadline reported that co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan had decided to conclude the show when it returns later this year. According to the outlet, the rumored decision was made after Kevin requested to only “spend a week shooting” the remaining six episodes.

Sources told Deadline that Paramount Network “declined” his proposal and were moving on with a new Yellowstone spin-off starring Matthew McConaughey. The publication shared that the actor is “currently in negotiations” and Taylor plans to write the show with Matthew as the lead.

So, is Kevin really leaving Yellowstone?

As of right now, there is no official news if Kevin is leaving the Yellowstone cast. Most recently, on May 5, Deadline confirmed that the series will end with season 5 but it was unknown if Kevin will return when filming resumes in August.

According to the report, Yellowstone season 5 part 2 is set to premiere in November while an untitled sequel starring Matthew is moving forward with a December debut date. What’s more, folks can expect to see familiar faces in the follow-up series. Per the outlet, the actor will be “joined by handful of original Yellowstone cast members.”

Fans may have heard that Yellowstone cast member Cole Hauser previously revealed that there’s supposed to be a season 6 and 7, which would have presumably included Kevin as the Dutton patriarch. While this won’t be the case anymore, it sounds like a new chapter is about to start without John Dutton in the driver’s seat.

Shortly after Deadline broke the original news that Yellowstone could come to a premature end, P aramount Network released a statement shutting down the rumors.

“We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come,” a Paramount Network spokesperson told Deadline. “Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

In short, it doesn’t look like Kevin is leaving Yellowstone … yet. What’s more, the actor still hasn’t spoken out about the rumors. Of course, that hasn’t stopped fans from voicing their concerns. In an Instagram post from January 31, viewers took to the comments section with messages asking him to stay on.

“Sir but you can’t leave Yellowstone 😩,” one person wrote. “Can we petition against you leaving 😩😩😩😩😩?” another added. “Please don’t leave this show is great. Please work it out,” a different fan said.

In case you’re wondering why Kevin only wanted to spend seven days filming Yellowstone season 5 part 2, it has to do with his upcoming movie, Horizon, which he co-wrote. While he hasn’t shared much about the project he’s directing and starring in, it’s currently in post-production, per IMDB.

Folks tuning into the 2023 Super Bowl also probably caught Kevin helping honor football legend Pat Tillman. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the next time he makes an appearance and perhaps talks about Yellowstone’s future.
